If your Wi-Fi is fast all day and then falls apart every evening from about 7pm, you're not imagining it and it's not just "peak time" being an unavoidable fact of life. There are ten specific causes, and each one has a fix.
Work through them in order — the first three solve the problem for the majority of households.
1. Everyone in your street is on Wi-Fi at the same time
The most common cause. Between 7pm and 11pm, every household on your street streams Netflix, video-calls family, and gaming on the same handful of 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi channels. Signals overlap, packets collide, everyone gets slower.
Fix: in your router's admin page, switch your 2.4 GHz network to channel 1, 6, or 11 (whichever is least crowded in your area — use the free WiFi Analyzer app on Android to see). 2. Your ISP throttles at peak times
Some ISPs quietly throttle bandwidth during peak evening hours, even on "unlimited" plans. It's technically legal in most markets and buried in their fair use policy.
Fix: run a speed test at 3pm and again at 9pm using speedtest.net or fast.com (the second is Netflix's own, harder for ISPs to throttle selectively). If the evening speed is dramatically lower on both, contact your ISP and quote the numbers. If they won't fix it, shop for a different provider that publishes real speed guarantees.
3. Your household is running background updates on 8 devices at once
Windows updates, iOS updates, PlayStation game downloads, Steam updates, Photos syncing to iCloud, security cameras uploading — modern homes have 15–30 connected devices all quietly using bandwidth in the background, and most of them prefer to update overnight.
Fix: in your router, enable QoS (Quality of Service) and prioritise the devices you actually use in the evening (your laptop, the TV, your work phone). Non-critical devices (game consoles, backup drives) get throttled first. Instant improvement on any router made in the last five years.
4. Your router is overheating
Routers that sit inside cabinets, on top of set-top boxes, or in direct sunlight overheat during the busiest use hours. Symptom: everything works fine in the morning, gets progressively worse through the day, terrible by evening.
Fix: move the router into open air. If it's warm to the touch after an hour of use, that's overheating. Ideal placement: chest height, at least 30 cm from other electronics, no walls or metal within 50 cm.
5. Your Wi-Fi channel width is set too wide
If you've set your 5 GHz to 160 MHz for maximum speed, you're using nearly half the available spectrum on a single network. Fine at 3am when nobody else is on. At 8pm on a busy street, that channel width guarantees interference with every neighbour.
Fix: in router settings, try 80 MHz on 5 GHz (still very fast, much more resistant to congestion). Only use 160 MHz if you live somewhere quiet or you're the only Wi-Fi network within range.
6. Your router firmware is out of date
Router firmware releases fix specific bugs, and "connections drop during peak load" is a bug that gets fixed frequently. Any router you haven't updated in 6+ months is likely running with known issues that have been patched.

7. Something on your network is broadcasting constantly
An old printer, a misbehaving security camera, a smart plug that's lost its cloud connection — one broken device can flood your network with broadcast traffic, killing performance for everyone else.
Fix: in your router admin, look at the connected devices list. Anything unfamiliar or misbehaving, unplug it for 24 hours. If the evening slowdown stops, you've found it.
8. Your modem is at end-of-life
ISP-provided modems typically last 4–7 years before their internal signal processing degrades. Symptom: signal is fine most of the day, but during high-bandwidth periods (evening streaming) it flakes.
Fix: call your ISP and ask for a modem swap. It's almost always free. Modern DOCSIS 3.1 modems handle peak-time load dramatically better than 5-year-old DOCSIS 3.0 units.
Rule of thumb: if your Wi-Fi is fine at 3pm but bad at 9pm every day, the problem is contention (yours or your neighbours'). If it's bad randomly at any time, the problem is your hardware.
9. You're too far from the router
Wi-Fi signal drops off sharply beyond about 8 metres or through more than one wall. If your evening usage happens in a room far from the router, you're getting a fraction of the bandwidth the router is actually delivering.
Fix: short-term, move the router closer to where you actually use Wi-Fi in the evening. Long-term, get a mesh Wi-Fi system — the TP-Link Deco X55 two-pack covers a typical 3-bed home for around $150 and eliminates dead zones.
10. A specific device is hogging the connection
Someone in the house is downloading a 60 GB game update, or a laptop is running an unattended Time Machine backup. One device on the network can absorb 80% of your bandwidth.
Fix: in the router admin, sort connected devices by current bandwidth use. Whoever is at the top is your culprit. Have a friendly word.
The 15-minute evening Wi-Fi tune-up

- Split 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz into separate SSIDs, use 5 GHz for phones/laptops (5 min)

Common Wi-Fi questions we get
How often should I reboot my router?
Once a month. Routers run 24/7 with limited RAM and leak memory over time. A monthly reboot clears the accumulated state and often solves the "everything is slow but works after unplugging it" problem. Set a phone reminder.
Do more antennas = more speed?
No. Antenna count relates to MIMO capacity, which helps when multiple devices are active simultaneously. A four-antenna router doesn't give a single laptop 4× the speed of a two-antenna router. Marketing loves this misconception.
Should I switch to a mesh system?
If you have more than one dead Wi-Fi spot in your house and the router placement can't fix it, yes. If you have one small dead spot, a single well-placed extender is cheaper than mesh.
