If your home has more than one dead Wi-Fi spot, a mesh system fixes it for around $150. This guide takes you from unboxing to full coverage in under an hour, with no jargon.
What mesh Wi-Fi actually is
Instead of one big router trying to cover the whole house, mesh systems use 2-3 smaller "nodes" spread around your home. They talk to each other over a dedicated backhaul channel, so your phone stays connected to whichever node is closest without you noticing the handover.
The end result: no dead spots, no "let me walk to the kitchen because Wi-Fi is bad in my bedroom", and no reconnecting when you move around.
Which mesh system to buy
For 95% of homes:
TP-Link Deco X55 — 3-pack, ~$200. Covers up to 6,500 sq ft, Wi-Fi 6, dead simple setup. Our recommendation for most households.
Eero 6+ — 3-pack, ~$220. Owned by Amazon (privacy caveat), but the setup is genuinely the easiest of anything we tested. Good for non-technical households.
Google Nest Wifi Pro — 3-pack, ~$300. Wi-Fi 6E, best-looking hardware, tight integration with Google Home ecosystem. Overkill for most, essential if you want 6 GHz on Apple/Google devices.
For big houses (>3,500 sq ft): TP-Link Deco XE75 Pro 3-pack (~$400) or upgrade to a 3-pack of any of the above.
Get the Deco X55 unless you have a specific reason not to.
Before you start (5 min)
- Find your existing router. You need to know where the internet cable comes into your house.
- Download the mesh app. For Deco, it's the "TP-Link Deco" app on iOS/Android. Install it before you unbox anything.
- Check your internet plan speed. Run a speed test wired directly into the modem — this is the ceiling. No router can give you more than this.
- Grab a chair or step-stool. You'll want to place nodes at chest height or slightly above, which usually means not on the floor.
Node placement (10 min — the most important part)
Placement matters more than the brand you buy. Get this right and any mesh system works. Get it wrong and even the best gear underperforms.
Node 1 (main): Where your internet cable comes in. Plug directly into the modem via the included ethernet cable. Chest height, open air, at least 30 cm from walls or metal.
Node 2: Roughly halfway between Node 1 and the furthest room you use daily. NOT in the furthest room itself — halfway. Nodes need to hear each other clearly.
Node 3 (if you have one): Extending from Node 2, again halfway to the last coverage area. Or place it near the biggest single dead zone.
Rule of thumb: if you can't see one node from another (through open doors or across an open room), the mesh backhaul will be weak. Move them.
Setup steps (10 min)
- Unplug your existing router. Leave the modem plugged in.
- Plug Node 1 into the modem via ethernet cable. Power it on. Wait for the light to settle.
- Open the mesh app on your phone. Sign in / create an account. It'll auto-detect Node 1.
- Follow the app's setup wizard. It'll ask you to name your Wi-Fi network, set a password, and configure administrator credentials. Take 3 minutes to write these down somewhere permanent.
- Add the second node. App will prompt you to place it, plug it in, and press a button. Takes 2 minutes.
- Add the third node (if applicable). Same process.
- Connect all your devices to the new network name. Old router is no longer needed — turn off its Wi-Fi in its own admin page (or leave it unplugged) so devices don't split between networks.
Day-one settings to change (5 min)
Once the mesh is up, dig into the app settings and:
- Enable WPA3 security (or WPA2/WPA3 mixed if you have old devices) — see our 9 router settings guide for why.
- Turn on Guest Wi-Fi — separate network for visitors so they can't see your smart-home devices.
- Enable automatic firmware updates — turn this on so you don't have to remember.
- Set up QoS if your app has it — prioritise your work laptop or the TV where you stream.
- Rename each node in the app so you know which is which (e.g. "Living room", "Master bedroom", "Office"). Makes future troubleshooting easier.
Rule of thumb: a mesh system's job is to make you forget it exists. If it needs weekly attention after week one, it's placed wrong.
Testing coverage
Walk through the house with your phone open to a speed test. In every room you use, you should see:
- 5 GHz signal in most rooms (fastest, shorter range)
- 2.4 GHz fallback if 5 GHz isn't reachable
- Speeds at least 50% of your internet plan's ceiling
- No dropouts as you move between nodes
If any room fails: move the closest node, don't add more. Nodes need each other. Bad placement plus more nodes = worse network.
What to do with your old router
- Keep the modem — that's the box your ISP cable plugs into.
- Sell or recycle the router — it's genuinely e-waste now. Some ISPs will take it back.
- Or repurpose it — flash OpenWrt firmware and use as a guest AP in the garage.
When mesh is the wrong answer
- Small apartment (<1,000 sq ft): a single good router covers this. Save money.
- Poor internet upstream: if your ISP delivers 30 Mbps, mesh won't magically create 300. Fix the upstream first.
- Wired backhaul available: if you can run ethernet between rooms, wired access points beat mesh every time.

How we tested Wi-Fi advice
Every recommendation here was tested across three home layouts: a 900 sq ft apartment (single router, thick internal walls), a 2,400 sq ft two-storey house (needed mesh coverage), and a 3,800 sq ft single-storey house with a detached garage office (three-node mesh needed). Signal strength was measured using both device-level speed tests and a dedicated Wi-Fi analyzer app (WiFi Explorer on Mac, WiFi Analyzer on Android) at 12 fixed points in each layout.
Where routers or extenders were involved, we ran each setup for a minimum of 14 days of real household use — including evening streaming peaks, morning video-call load, and overnight software updates on 10-15 connected devices. Marketing speed claims from router manufacturers were consistently 40-60% higher than real-world sustained throughput; we report what we measured, not what the box promises.

Common Wi-Fi questions we get
How often should I reboot my router?
Once a month. Routers run 24/7 with limited RAM and leak memory over time. A monthly reboot clears the accumulated state and often solves the "everything is slow but works after unplugging it" problem. Set a phone reminder.
Do more antennas = more speed?
No. Antenna count relates to MIMO capacity, which helps when multiple devices are active simultaneously. A four-antenna router doesn't give a single laptop 4× the speed of a two-antenna router. Marketing loves this misconception.
Should I switch to a mesh system?
If you have more than one dead Wi-Fi spot in your house and the router placement can't fix it, yes. If you have one small dead spot, a single well-placed extender is cheaper than mesh.
