If your laptop takes three minutes to boot, opens Chrome like it's negotiating a treaty, and the fan works overtime just to load a spreadsheet, don't buy a new one yet. There's a very good chance the entire problem is a mechanical hard drive that's twenty years behind modern speed expectations.

Here's how to tell in under two minutes, plus a clear walkthrough of the cheapest, highest-return upgrade in personal computing.

1. Cold boot takes over a minute

Time your laptop from pressing the power button to a fully usable desktop (where clicking the Start menu is instant). On any laptop from 2015 or later with an SSD, this should be 30–45 seconds. On a spinning hard drive, it's typically 90 seconds to five minutes.

If you're above one minute consistently, the drive is almost certainly the bottleneck.

2. Task Manager shows disk pegged at 100%

Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, click the Performance tab, watch the Disk graph. If it sits at 100% during boot or when opening any app, that's not "the laptop is old" — that's a spinning hard drive that literally cannot read data any faster.

Modern software assumes SSD-level random-read speeds. On mechanical drives, everything queues.

3. Apps launch slowly one at a time

Try opening Chrome, Word, and Spotify simultaneously. On an SSD they all pop up within a couple of seconds. On a mechanical drive, they queue and each one takes 5–15 seconds because the drive head can only be in one place at a time.

The disk head is the same physical technology as a record needle. In 2026, that's an extraordinary limitation.

4. The drive makes actual clicking or whirring sounds

Put your ear near the laptop during boot. If you hear a rhythmic clicking or a soft whirring that changes pitch, you have a spinning drive with physical moving parts. SSDs are completely silent — no motor, no arm, no platters.

If the clicking is louder than usual, sharper, or the drive fails to read files intermittently, back up now — that's the sound of a drive about to die.

5. Windows Update takes literal hours

Multi-hour "Installing update, 12% complete" screens are a hallmark symptom. Windows update writes thousands of small files to disk, which is exactly the workload spinning drives handle worst.

On an SSD, the same update finishes in 15–30 minutes.

6. The fan runs constantly, even on idle

Sustained disk thrashing (drive constantly seeking) makes the CPU wait, which makes it work harder for longer to complete anything, which produces heat, which spins the fan. Break the cycle by fixing the disk and the fan quiets down.

7. Everything else on the laptop still works fine

The final test: is the screen fine? Keyboard? Battery holds a reasonable charge? Wi-Fi works? If yes, the machine is almost certainly not worth throwing out — the drive is the entire problem.

Laptops from 2015–2020 with an SSD upgrade are genuinely competent daily-driver machines in 2026. Battery permitting, they'll last you another 3–5 years.

Rule of thumb: an SSD upgrade in a 2016–2020 laptop is the single highest-return upgrade in personal computing. Under $50, twenty minutes of work, transformative outcome.

Which SSD to buy

For 95% of upgrades:

Both plug directly into the SATA slot inside your laptop where the current hard drive lives. If your laptop is newer (2019+) and has an M.2 NVMe slot, the Crucial P3 500 GB at ~$40 is even faster, but check your laptop's spec sheet first.

What you'll need to do the swap

Total: about 30 minutes of hands-on work, plus 1–3 hours of unattended cloning time.

  1. A USB-to-SATA cable or dock (~$15) — lets you connect the new SSD to your laptop over USB before you install it, so you can clone your existing drive over.
  2. Free cloning software — Macrium Reflect Free (Windows) or Carbon Copy Cloner trial (Mac). Both walk you through cloning the old drive to the new one in one click.
  3. A small Phillips screwdriver — that's it.

The swap, step by step

  1. Plug the new SSD into your laptop via the USB adapter. Windows detects it as a new empty drive.
  2. Open your cloning software, choose "Clone this drive" (source = current internal drive, destination = new SSD). Start the clone. It takes 1–3 hours for a mostly-full drive.
  3. Once done, shut the laptop down completely.
  4. Flip it over, remove the drive access panel (usually one small door held by 2–4 screws).
  5. Slide the old drive out, slide the new SSD in. Close the panel.
  6. Boot. If everything worked, Windows starts up exactly as before — but 5–10x faster.

When it isn't worth it

If the laptop is older than 2013, has less than 4 GB of RAM, has a broken hinge or dying battery you'd also need to replace, or if the whole thing costs more to fix than a modest new machine, don't sink the money. An SSD in a genuinely dead laptop is a $50 lesson.
